Roma Revealed

Welcome to the capital of our region, Roma. This town offers a cosmopolitan feel with boutique and specialty retailers, espresso bars and cafes, restaurants and pubs and all within a four-block radius.

A short distance from town, you can learn about the region’s agricultural history at the largest cattle selling facility in Australia, or the towns importance to the oil and gas industry through interpretive tours at The Big Rig.

What To Do

Step back in time with us and explore this unique old building. The Factory opened in 1910 and closed down in 1960/61 due to the lack of supply of milk and cream.

Open Wednesday 9:30am – 12:00pm.

Outback Queensland’s first craft distillery featuring gin, vodka, rum and liqueurs. Visit the cellar door, conveniently located on Roma’s doorstep.

Take a flight through the spirits with a tasting paddle or satisfy your hunger with one of the signature grazing platters featuring many of Western Queensland’s local ingredients.

With large expanses of grass and a sandpit for the kids to play in, why not drop in and enjoy a drink, play some lawn games or relax in a beanbag and enjoy a cocktail under the outback skies.

Keep an eye out for our pop-up bar at events across Outback Queensland where we will bring the spirit of the Outback to you.

Witness a live cattle auction at Australia’s largest cattle selling facility, responsible for auctioning over 350,000 cattle annually. Tours are available at 8:30 am on Tuesdays (subject to cattle numbers). Explore the interpretative centre that showcases the evolution of the cattle industry.

Discover all the twists and drama of when oil and gas first flowed in our nation, the story of our oil and gas pioneers comes alive through exhibits, machinery displays, audio-visual features and our local “Roma Rigger” guides. Book into the Big Rig Sunset Experience and enjoy a glass of Outback port and learn about the events that threatened to destroy the Australian oil and gas industry before it even began unearthing the stories of Australia’s riggers, past and present.

Get under the bonnet of the Aussie car industry at Up the Creek Garage, where you can view a collection of automobiles, from classic cars through to rusty relics.

Discover Roma and surrounds with a Boobook eco-guide, who’ll help reveal our region’s secrets. With a variety of fully catered half, full day and extended tours, you’ll gain resident knowledge of Australia’s wildlife, pioneering history, local industries and lots more.

With a diameter of 9.51m, a height of 6m and a crown of 20m, stop by to see this famous foliage. It’s estimated this bottle tree’s branches date back to the 19th century.

Read the 140 names of servicemen from the Roma district who served during the First World War along the heritage listed avenue.

Step out along the concrete pathway along Bungil Creek – keep an eye out for local walkers, joggers or cyclists.

A short drive west of Roma is the Mucka Pub, the heart and soul of Muckadilla. Join the friendly locals for a classic country pub feed and a coldie or two.

Lenroy Slab Hut was built from rough hewn cypress pine in 1893. It was later moved to this site where it served as the Visitor Information Centre until the present one was built. It gives a reminder of the reality of bush life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The hut now has a galvanised iron roof which replaced the original Box tree bark just a year after it was built, according to an inscription on the ceiling.

Discover the charm of the Australian bush with a leisurely stroll around the scenic Railway Dam. This captivating walk is a must for nature enthusiasts, providing an immersive experience in the heart of the Roma region. Spanning 14 hectares, the gardens proudly display eleven distinct vegetation communities, featuring native flora such as Brigalow, Coolibah, and Mulga.

As you meander along the path, relish the diverse landscapes that unveil views of the dam. Renowned as a premier spot for bird-watching, the area around the dam offers an exciting opportunity to observe a variety of bird species in their natural habitat.

If you’re a 4WD enthusiast who loves nothing more than to get out and explore nature, it’s time to buckle up. Enjoy changing landscapes along the drive with views of native flora and fauna, including the prehistoric Grass Trees.

Rhoetosaurus brownei was a medium-sized sauropod that lived in the area around what is now Roma in south-western Queensland during the Jurassic period: 160-170 million years ago when Australia was part of the supercontinent of Gondwana. The first fossils of Rhoetosaurus were found in 1924 by a team of stockmen, mustering horses on a station approximately 50 km north of Roma, south-western Queensland. This was only the fourth time that dinosaur fossils had been found in Australia, and all previous discoveries had been of much smaller animals
